"I have heard of some clay having a sulfur smell and keeping the pH too low.. but it seams odd to keep it high.. my advice is the same as always ,.. leave the pH high for now.. it will kick start your system faster, and the pH will drop on its own…"

"Hi Maggie...take your well water and let it sit out in a glass for about 3 days...then test the pH and see what it says. Your well water may in all likelihood actually have a significantly higher pH than you are being led to think, if you are…"

High pH expanded clay

Someone on here suggested that my media might be the culprit causing my high pH, so I tested some expanded clay from my beds and some that had never been used.  I put water in with each and waited a couple of hours and tested the water.  I also…See More

"That looks like great stuff!  Thanks for the link. If you're ever looking for NSF potable water paint you can find it here.  Expensive is right, though."

"That sounds like a really great way to do it.  If you've got a captive market aquaponics is a real winner. If you look at Pentair's class, they have some real heavy hitters teaching it."

"Hi Jeremiah, The caulk is listed as non-toxic, livestock safe, carcinogen free, and meets California's prop 65.  I trust it, and assume that it's not NSF listed for potable water because that process is expensive. If you're…"

"Marketing is the least of our challenges. It's a commercial-scale system, but it's not a commercial system in a strict sense. We use everything we produce on our campus (it's a large organization with 60+ people at each meal), we…"

Jeremiah Robinson replied to Stevan Covic's discussion Advice on hybrid setup
"Hi Stevan, I've found trout to be easier to raise than some people suggest.  As long as you supply enough oxygen they're pretty tolerant.  Is there a reason you're shying away from a dedicated biofilter, such as a moving bed…"

"That's a big system.  Have you taken any classes?  Commercial aquaponics is a very challenging beast, especially the marketing part."
