David - WI replied to Michael sanders's discussion I want to monitor my AP system from a web site
"The new Neptune Apex has a webcam feed so you can view a camera while checking the readings.  It's going to be VERY hard for the average aquaponic gardener to beat the APEX I think. "

Dog waste ok in Biopod?

The thought of putting Dog waste in the Biopod (a remarkable compost bin that self harvests Black Soldier fly larvae) got me excited. Dog poop is not good for anything, but, in this case, is it "good" for growing larvae and then later feeding my fish the larvae? Animal manure is encouraged, Dog poop is not manure but we catch alot of gofers and the larvae love decomposing them so I need some thoughts! Am I crazy?See More

"Just as a post mortem, I kept adding lime and checking pH over a couple weeks. It did the trick, now I'm almost done nitrogen cycling, and seedlings seem fine. I'll be ready to add fish next week!"

Vlad Jovanovic replied to Scott Hair's discussion What fish would you recommend for a beginner?
"Verna, have you averaged out energy (heating) costs per pound of fish, per grow out season? (I'm particularly interested in winter heating costs for the tilapia). And how does that play out against the price you sell the fish for?"

"We are at 6,500 ft elevation in SW Colorado where the temps can get pretty darn low. We have 36 Blue Tilapias that are locally grown and we maintain the IBC tote at around 74-78 f and everyone is growing nicely"
