I came across this canoe hull for free. I went around the top of it with schedule 40 3/4" pvc and tied it together in the middle. Surprisingly the wife gave me her blessing to let it stay home. My growing takes place in limited spaces. So... should I make a wicking bed or a raised bed? It is 16' long and about 2 1/2' wide in the middle and 12"deep for the most part. I am going to placesand bags underneath to support the bottom.

Permalink Reply by Brian Maclean on January 28, 2013 at 2:30am My thought would be to raise off the ground some way, fill with pond pebbles and hydroton, making it a fill & drain..Nice find, I'm working on a 10' John Boat for the same..
I am leaning towards the wicking bed so far because I really don't want to raise it off the ground. I am thinking about supporting it with sand bags then going foreward from there. If I do a wicking bed, I have access of free tumbled glass from the city waste management for the bottom and am thinking that I can put coconut coir chips for the wicking material and then compost or peat moss. Am I correct so far?

Permalink Reply by James Woods on February 2, 2013 at 3:35pm How about using it for a fish tank? I'm currently using a 12 foot fiberglass dinghy as one :-)
I already have three separate small ap systems. The fish tanks are 150 gallon,110 gallon and 64 gallon. I am just a little short on growspace so I am still looking at it and trying to decide. I would love to see a photo of your dingy fish tank.
So.... I have the pipe and rocks in the canoe hull and now time for coconut coir. Should I put some fabric over the rocks first? or just put the coir on top of the rocks ? I am planning to put the coarse chips down then the fine stuff then peat moss.
Permalink Reply by Bob Campbell on February 18, 2013 at 10:48am I'll be building my first wicking bed today. From the videos I've watched it appears that the roots will attach themselves to fabric, so I'm going to use straw between the sand or gravel and the top soil.
I tested coir and did not like the way it wicked. I will be using a worm compost soil mix.

Permalink Reply by Bryan Acred on April 11, 2013 at 11:55am Thank you Brian. I have not watered it since I built it in February because rain runs off the roof into it when it rains. It is starting to get more sunlight every day as the season comes along. I need more plants that like wet feet. Any suggestions?
