Fish not eating

Help--our fish went from eating wildly to no interest in eating. It has been almost a month since they ate normally. Eventually the food gets eaten but not like before when they (Tilapia)would break the surface and roll wildly to eat to now. We haven't changed food or anything. My water is pH 6.8, ammonia .25, Nitrite, 0 and Nitrates >40 temp 75 our system is new since Feb 2013 and we have lost only 1 of our original goldfish.

What is that smell?

Posted on April 26, 2013 at 9:17am 3 Comments

After almost 3 months of awesome aquaponic success, no dead fish, great plant growth etc it all hit at once, almost overnight! One morning I had a pool of water in growbed #4 at the water inlet. I decided to "stir it up". I was rewarded with a disgustingly foul odor similar to old gym socks. I began pulling out old black roots and slime. Water chemicals maintained in the acceptable range and everything continued to grow. Having thought I had resolved the issue I flooded the bed with fresh… Continue

In the beginning

Posted on March 2, 2013 at 3:11pm 5 Comments

This all started about 9 months ago. After using over $1,000 in water for a small rooftop dirt garden in SW Colorado one summer we needed a way to grow a productive garden with limited water.

Still unsure just how the Aquaponics idea emerged but I'm sure it was due in part to the Internet and ideas from a few marijuana growers we know who use hydroponics.

We started with John hand digging a 8x8 hole off the back deck for a "fish room". He labored weekend after weekend with shovel and… Continue
